Building a progressive organization in the VUCA World

In the dynamic landscape of the modern business environment, characterised by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA), building a progressive organisation is imperative for continual success. A progressive organisation not only adapts to change but also embraces it, turning challenges into opportunities. It encourages diversity, equity, inclusion, and adaptability, leading to enhanced employee satisfaction, lower attrition, and ultimately improved productivity and business performance. Overall, a progressive workplace not only benefits the employees and the organisation itself, but it also contributes to the broader community and society, making it an essential aspect of modern business.

But is it so easy to build such an organisation? The obstacles in the VUCA world make this work more crucial than ever. Not only does it require clearly defining a compelling vision and mission that align with progressive values, but it also requires ensuring that the organisation’s goals reflect a commitment to positive social impact and sustainability.

At JBM Group, we realise the importance of being resilient, innovative, and responsive to change, which positions us to grow in this dynamic environment. We firmly believe that this can only be achieved by fostering a culture where employees are encouraged to experiment, take calculated risks, learn from both successes and failures, and are empowered to adapt swiftly to changing circumstances. All this backed by an environment of open-mindedness and approach that aims to promote employee well-being.

Our business foundation rests on three key pillars: technology, innovative business models, and people (TIP). Our people are core to our organisation, who, with the right application of the latest technology, come up with innovative approaches and solutions that are much ahead of time.

We have been consistently raising the bar with innovation without negotiating on our core values that has been a true mantra of our success. As a diversified conglomerate with human assets of over 30,000+ spread across multiple geographies and ethnicities, it is imperative that the values and larger objectives are shared effectively to ensure that the people grow in alignment with the organisation’s growth.

Over the last 40 years, we have been successful in creating an engaging experience for our human capital by way of our work culture, processes, systems, and employee-first approach. Recently, we launched an organisational transformation initiative, Sankalp Siddhi, that focuses on balancing the Wheel of Life and aims at six aspects of human life: spirituality, social, and Social & Culture. Currently in its 3rd year, Sankalp Siddhi has taken the form of a movement within the organisation towards creating an environment of positivity, accountability, and discipline towards the self, family, society, organisation, and the nation at large.

In a fast-paced work environment, work-life balance is essential for people to perform. At JBM, work-life balance has two key elements: passion and drive. What drives a person, and what is their passion—something that defines a person? We set realistic expectations and encourage employees to take regular breaks. We firmly believe that family and friends are equally important and a great way to destress.

We have implemented efficient work processes by leveraging technology, effectively delegating responsibilities, and providing professional development opportunities that not only prevents burnout but also ensures a balanced approach to scaling new horizons.

I do believe that all this is only possible with inclusive leadership where diverse perspectives are valued and issues are approached with empathy. This, coupled with effective communication, acts as a great way to nurture people, challenge them positively, and motivate them to surpass the standards and targets that bring out the best in them. This fosters an open, transparent, and positive work environment.

In the VUCA world, building a progressive organisation is not just a strategic choice—it’s a necessity for survival and growth. By cultivating visionary leadership, fostering an agile culture, prioritising continuous learning, and embracing technology, organisations can not only navigate uncertainty but thrive in it. In this rapidly evolving landscape, adaptability and progressiveness are the hallmarks of enduring success.
