New visa horizons: 2024 updates promise easier access for Indian globetrotters

Latest visa regulations offer streamlined processes for Indians exploring global destinations

As the summer holiday season looms closer, Indian travellers are preparing their itineraries for international adventures. With the anticipation of exploring new cultures and landscapes, it becomes paramount to stay informed about the latest visa regulations. In 2024, several countries have rolled out updated visa policies, promising smoother journeys and extended stays for Indian passport holders.

Japan’s eVisas for Indian travellers

Japan has embraced the digital age by launching eVisa applications tailored for Indian travellers. Administered by Japan Visa Application Centers operated by VFS Global, this new process simplifies visa acquisition. The eVisa, designed for short-term tourism, offers a single-entry option with a maximum stay of 90 days. Notably, visas will be issued electronically, necessitating travellers to present a visa issuance notice on their mobile devices at the airport.

Dubai’s five-year multiple-entry tourist visa

Dubai has recently unveiled a tailor-made visa program aimed specifically at Indian travellers, reflecting the notable surge in visits from India. This new visa offering extends a five-year, multiple-entry permit, allowing travellers to enjoy stays of up to 90 days per visit, extendable once, without surpassing 180 days annually.

Designed to accommodate both business and leisure trips, this visa facilitates unlimited entries and exits within the five-year validity period. Essential requirements for applicants include a passport photo, six months’ worth of bank statements indicating a minimum balance of $4,000 (INR 3,33,447), a valid passport with at least six months’ validity, health insurance coverage, and round-trip flight tickets. The application process typically spans 2-5 days, with submissions accepted through the GDRFA website or app, or the official ICP website.

Thailand’s visa-free window

Indian passport holders received a welcoming gesture from Thailand as the government announced a temporary visa exemption. From November 10, 2023, to May 10, 2024, Indian travellers can explore Thailand for tourism purposes without requiring a tourist visa, enjoying a 30-day stay.

Kenya’s visa elimination

In a move to boost tourism, Kenya abolished visa requirements for Indian citizens and global visitors effective January 1. This visa-free initiative aims to enhance travel experiences for those eager to explore Kenya’s wildlife safaris and beach attractions.

Access to Schengen Visas for Romania and Bulgaria

Romania and Bulgaria have partially integrated into the Schengen Area, opening up new visa possibilities for Indian travellers. Now, Indian passport holders can obtain Schengen visas from Romania and Bulgaria, allowing stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. However, visas issued before April 1 by these countries won’t grant access to the entire Schengen area.
