Messi’s World Cup post surpasses “The Egg’s” previous record as Instagram’s most liked photo

Lionel Messi's post is now the most liked photo on Instagram. The post has surpassed the record originally set by an infamous egg with over 68.3 million likes, at the time of writing.

Lionel Messi’s first Instagram post after winning the FIFA World Cup 2022 has received the most likes in the social media platform’s history.

Argentina won the FIFA World Cup in Qatar this year under Messi’s leadership, who is also recognised as the Greatest of All Time (GOAT). Now, his Instagram post celebrating the team’s historic victory has set new records of its own.

Messi’s post features a gallery of the football player holding the championship trophy, alongside his teammates. The post has surpassed the record originally set by an infamous egg with over 68.3 million likes, at the time of writing.

In 2019, a mysterious image of a simple egg received 57 million likes after being shared. Perhaps because so little was known about the post and its account holder, the image captured the internet’s attention. This account, which is named @world_record_egg, also celebrated Messi’s win, by uploading a story on its Instagram account.

Thus, it is not surprising that the fans have flocked in order to like Messi’s post, following Argentina’s victory over France in the World Cup finals. This is a result of how popular he has been on social media throughout the tournament. According to a tweet by the Guinness World Book of Records, Messi has broken a number of records since this victory. This contains the total number of World Cup matches played by him as well as his ‘Man of the Match’ honours.

For the GOAT, Instagram’s victory is merely the beginning.
