Make in India gets a Tesla boost: USA EV giant to open factory in Gujarat

Tesla nears its debut in India: Gujarat manufacturing plant announcement anticipated in January 2024, at Vibrant Gujarat Summit

Tesla is gearing up to make its entry into India through the establishment of a manufacturing plant in Gujarat, scheduled for next year. Media reports suggest that negotiations for the EV maker’s first manufacturing unit in India are in the final stages and expected to wrap up soon. The official announcement regarding Tesla’s manufacturing facility in the state is anticipated to be made during the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Summit in January 2024.

The Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, conceptualised in 2003, is gearing up for its tenth edition. This milestone summit will commemorate “20 years of Vibrant Gujarat as the Summit of Success.” The event plays a pivotal role as a global platform for business networking, knowledge exchange, and forging strategic partnerships, all aimed at fostering inclusive growth and sustainable development.

The choice of Gujarat for Tesla’s manufacturing plant is attributed to the state’s favorable business environment, as reported by the paper. Additionally, the Gujarat government has presented Sanand, Becharaji, and Dholera as potential locations for the plant. Insiders suggest that Gujarat aligns seamlessly with Tesla’s export-oriented strategy, aiming to meet both domestic and international demand, according to Ahmedabad Mirror’s coverage.

Tesla has been in talks with the central government, requesting concessions to streamline its entry into the Indian market. These concessions are a crucial aspect of the broader discussions aimed at easing regulatory challenges and creating a business-friendly environment for Tesla’s operations in the country.

Should Tesla establish its presence in Gujarat, it will join a roster of automotive companies already present in the state, including Maruti Suzuki, Tata, and Morris Garage, all of which have manufacturing facilities there.

During a Cabinet briefing on Thursday, Gujarat Minister Rushikesh Patel drew a connection between Gujarat’s awareness and alignment with Tesla’s overarching objectives. He underscored that the government is actively engaged in discussions with the electric vehicle manufacturer to solidify the deal for setting up the manufacturing plant in Gujarat.
