India's diplomatic landscape finds itself at pivotal crossroads.

The stage is set, and the world’s eyes are turning towards New Delhi, as the city stands more than well prepared to host leaders from  G20 nations starting from today for the next 3 days.  The anticipation and speculations surrounding this pivotal event have reached a fever pitch as leaders from the world’s top 20 economies converge in India’s vibrant national capital to discuss and coordinate policies related to international financial stability and sustainable development. The G20 member states account for a substantial portion of the world’s population and GDP, and so makes their collective decisions highly impactful on the global stage.

India as the Host

As the world’s largest democracy and one of the fastest-growing major economies, India’s role in shaping global policies is increasingly crucial. Hosting the G20 provides India with an opportunity to further assert its presence on the international stage.

India’s Diplomatic Stakes

India’s diplomatic landscape finds itself at pivotal crossroads, characterized with well-established ties to developing nations and a growing partnership with Western nations like France, Australia, and the United States, India has positioned itself as a voice for the Global South. Within this diplomatic intricacy, India has strategically positioned itself as a crucial bridge-builder between emerging economies and Western leadership on crucial issues, ranging from the mobilization of climate financing to ensuring food security and advancing reforms within multilateral development institutions.

China’s decision to send Premier Li Qiang instead of President Xi Jinping raises questions about the possibility of diplomatic engagement between India and China regarding their ongoing border dispute.

Notably, India is pushing for the full G20 membership of all 55 African Union states, a move backed by Germany. This underscores India’s commitment to inclusivity on the global stage.

However, the looming shadow of the Ukraine conflict casts uncertainty over the summit’s success. Russia’s suspension of participation in the Black Sea Grain Initiative has exacerbated food insecurity, raising concerns among G20 developing countries. The recent G20 finance ministers’ summit failed to produce a consensus statement due to China and Russia’s objections, highlighting the challenge of addressing global crises within the G20 framework.

Adding to the complexity, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s absence due to the Ukraine conflict, replaced by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, adds an unpredictable element. India, a significant importer of Russian resources and weaponry, aims to avoid any mention of “war” in official G20 pronouncements.

France’s refusal to sign any statement not condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine further complicates matters, while the United States expects a diplomatic shift from India regarding its stance on Russia.

The summit will emphasize the importance of women’s participation in the workforce and leadership roles, as well as addressing issues such as gender-based violence and discrimination.

The world eagerly awaits the outcomes of these high-level discussions that are predicted to take place in Delhi. The decisions made during this summit will have far-reaching implications for global cooperation, international policies, economies, climate action, healthcare, and geopolitical stability for years to come. India, as the host, is poised to lead these discussions, reflecting in its growing influence on the global stage and its commitment to addressing pressing global challenges. Yet, how successful the summit will be hangs in balance.
