Elon Musk introduces xAI: A new approach to AI?

After being a co-founder for Sam Altman’s ‘OpenAI’, Elon Musk is all set to launch his own company, ‘xAI’, supposedly a rival to ChatGPT

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and Twitter, announced the launch of his new Artificial Intelligence-based venture, ‘xAI’, on Twitter on July 12. On Friday, July 14, there will be a Twitter Spaces conversation in which the team will share insights on the topic.

Musk has previously collaborated with Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, and contributed to the creation of the wildly popular chatbot ChatGPT. Musk, however, subsequently criticised the chatbot for being biassed and repeatedly voiced his concerns about it. . In an interview in April, Musk had hinted on the release of his new company saying, “We are going to start something which I call TruthGPT”. Pertaining to this, Musk has often underlined the need for AI governance and development, as well as the fact that he wants to create a tool that would improve our comprehension of reality.

With that idea in mind, Musk aims to understand the true nature of the universe with the help of xAI. The team is staffed with former employees from OpenAI, among others. Moreover, the website states, “We will work closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies to make progress towards our mission.” It is challenging to draw a conclusion about what their precise goals are given the limited information currently available on the website.

With a profound understanding of the exponential growth and transformative power of AI, Musk acknowledges the need for responsible development and stringent safety precautions. Musk has strongly expressed his worries and taken proactive attempts to address these issues because he recognises the potential risks connected with unchecked AI which according to him could be our biggest existential threat. In his relentless pursuit of developing safe and beneficial AI systems, he has adopted a distinctive approach, notably in the design and implementation of what he calls “xAI.”

Given the current fall in Twitter users caused by Threads by Meta, could this perhaps be a simple marketing ploy to reclaim the spotlight?
