Akasa Air plans international debut, adds Boeing 737s to fleet

Launched in Aug 2022, Akasa Air achieves a global milestone, becoming the fastest airline to reach a fleet of 20 aircraft in its inaugural year

Akasa Air, the latest entrant in India’s aviation industry, has expanded its aircraft lineup to 22 within a span of 17 months. This growth includes the recent incorporation of two Boeing 737 MAX 8s. The current fleet comprises 21 Boeing 737 MAX 8s and one Boeing 737 MAX 8 200.

“Akasa Air’s remarkable growth testifies the sheer promise that India holds as an aviation market. The additions to our fleet will help us bolster the strength of our operations as we expand our footprint and foray into international skies in the coming months. Each addition to our fleet brings us closer to our purpose of connecting people, places, and cultures, and we hope that as we step into the next phase of growth, we will be able to serve millions of satisfied travellers across the globe,” this was stated by Vinay Dube, founder and CEO of Akasa Air in a release.

According to reports, Akasa Air, a low-cost carrier based in Mumbai, is on the verge of finalising an order for as many as 150 Boeing 737 MAX narrowbody aircraft. This strategic move aims to position the airline to capitalise on the growing demand for affordable air travel within India and facilitate its expansion into international markets.

The official announcement of this significant aircraft order is anticipated during the Wings India event scheduled to occur in Hyderabad from January 18 to 21, 2024, marking it as the most prominent civil aviation event in India for the year 2024.

Supported by the late star trader and investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, who unfortunately passed away a few months after the airline’s launch, Akasa Air has been actively strategizing to broaden its network. The airline aims to extend its reach to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and other regions of South Asia, including Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bangladesh. Notably, Akasa Air intends to maintain a single-class configuration on the routes it operates as part of its expansion plans.
