World Bank President Ajay Banga included in 2023 list of Great Immigrants

A famous charitable organisation has added Ajay Banga, the president of the World Bank, to its annual “Great Immigrants” list of honorees who have improved and bolstered America and its democracy by their efforts and deeds.

Mr. Banga, who took over as World Bank president in June 2023, is the organization’s first-ever Indian American leader. In this year’s list of “Great Immigrants” by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, he is the only honoree of Indian origin.

According to a statement released by Carnegie on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, 63-year-old Banga, who has over 30 years of experience in senior roles, is expected to introduce transformative policies at the World Bank to fight poverty and address climate change, creating opportunity for people all over the world.

Mr. Banga reflected on how diversity aided in his leadership success during a fireside chat with Carnegie. “At the end of the day, if you surround yourself with people who look like you, who walk like you, and talk like you, and grew up in the same places as you did, then you will have a sense of comfort hiring people around you who have that familiarity. But you will also have the same blind spots. You will miss the same trends. You will miss the same opportunities,” stated Ajay Banga.

The organisation awarded 35 people this year from 33 different nations and from a variety of backgrounds. The honorees include people who, through their efforts as educators, mentors, benefactors, job creators, public servants, storytellers, and activists, have helped others find possibilities.
