Truecaller’s message is clear: You don’t need to take all your calls

Truecaller claims to have 90% accuracy in filtering out its users’ calls with the help of its advanced technology, how true is the claim?

Truecaller’s AI Assistant, a cutting-edge virtual voice-based and call screening feature, was initially introduced in September 2022, limited to select countries. However, with the escalating number of spam calls, this technological advancement couldn’t have come at a better time. The eagerly awaited release of this feature in India has finally arrived, offering much-needed relief to users from unnecessary spam calls.

Features and its working
Basically, the new AI Assistant screens out spam calls using advanced technology, so you don’t have to. The Assistant will ask questions of the caller, in order to understand who the caller is; and why the call is being made from their end. Truecaller claims to have 90% accuracy in filtering out its users’ calls with the help of its advanced tech, helping the users understand immediately if it is a spam call, without even having to pick up the call manually!

Here’s how it really works
On answering the call, the AI Assistant informs the caller that they are conversing with a virtual assistant, and tries to understand the reason for the call. Then, the call is transcribed for the user in a live speech-to-text option available on the App. The user can then, based on the transcribed page decide if he or she wants to personally continue or decline the call by clicking on either the green or red button, respectively. The call is recorded too, so the user can later listen to the conversation and decide on the plan of action according to their convenience.

Although the Assistant does not primarily make calls on its own, it will automatically answer the call if the phone is ringing for a long time when the user isn’t around. While most callers can’t tell much of a difference, Truecaller will by default inform the callers that the call is being taken up by a virtual assistant.

Truecaller allows its users to choose from a wide range of AI assistants by offering five different male and female voices that users can choose from according to their liking. It has diverse language options, including English, Hindi, and Hinglish, among many others. It also includes some regional languages, which Truecaller aims to expand on, in the coming future.

So far, the feature has only been made available on Android. However, reports suggest that, Truecaller aims to launch an iOS version soon. The AI Assistant is a premium feature that is available on a 14-day trial basis for users who opt for a 1-year subscription (Rs. 1499), or a 7-day trial for users who opt for a month-long subscription (Rs. 149).
