Spotify’s latest update imposes restrictions on free users: Is Premium the only way?

Spotify is committed to incentivising users to subscribe to its Premium service

In an attempt to expand its premium user base, Spotify has introduced several new features. Users have noticed a change in the in-app lyrics section, where lyrics are no longer visible to free users. Instead, a notification reading, “Enjoy lyrics on Spotify Premium,” now appears in the lyrics section, accompanied by a link for users to explore Spotify Premium further. Additionally, some users have observed restrictions on the number of song skips allowed per hour.

According to reports, Spotify is currently in the testing phase of these changes. C.J. Stanley, Spotify’s co-head of global communications, commented, “At Spotify, we routinely conduct various tests, with some shaping our broader user experience, while others serve as valuable learning experiences. We have no additional information to share at this time.”

The fate of Spotify’s lyrics feature remains uncertain for now. However, it is evident that Spotify is committed to incentivising users to subscribe to its Premium service. In their defense, the company aims to offer more exclusive features to Premium subscribers, thereby enriching their overall experience and ensuring they receive the full value of their subscription.

Currently, Spotify Premium’s plans and their respective prices in India are as follows:
