As Mbappe's contract enters its final year, football enthusiasts and clubs alike are speculating about his future
The 24-year-old French football star, Kylian Mbappe, has been dominating headlines and capturing the attention of football fans worldwide due to the impending expiration of his contract with the prestigious football club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), set to occur in 2024. He is currently playing for PSG and the French national football team.
Mbappe first signed for AS Monaco at age 14 (2015) and continued to play for Monaco up until 2017 for €1.2 million yearly. Post that, he played for PSG in 2017 on a loan transfer, while he was still a player for Monaco. As per reports, during the loan transfer, Mbappe was offered €355,000 weekly during the 2017-18 season which increased to €364,000 in the 2018-19 season. Mbappe signed a contract extension with PSG in 2022 where his salary was reportedly increased to €72 million per year, and receiving a signing bonus of €180 million. Throughout his spell with PSG, Mbappe has been instrumental in the club’s domestic success.
With only one year of his contract pending with PSG, Mbappe will be a free agent next summer, allowing him to join any other club on a free transfer basis. Furthermore, Mbappe will also be entitled to another €60 million as a loyalty bonus on completion of his stay at PSG according to the contract. For Mbappe himself, this pivotal moment in his career represents a critical decision-making process.
Mbappe has denied Saudi Arabia’s club – Al Hilal’s reported offer of €776 million per year. They also offered PSG a massive transfer fee of €336 million. However, the French forward is strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid. What remains to be seen is whether Mbappe will join the Los Blancos this summer or next year for free. On one hand, staying at PSG could provide him with the opportunity to continue building a legacy at a club he is familiar with, where he is already a fan favourite. On the other hand, a move to a different league or club could present fresh challenges and potentially elevate his career to new heights.
