Krutrim: India’s groundbreaking AI initiative unveiled by Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal

Krutrim Si Designs launches beta of multilingual chatbot, paving the way for advanced AI models

Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has announced the public testing availability of Krutrim, India’s indigenous artificial intelligence (AI). This innovative first-generation product is set to undergo continual improvement as development progresses. Additionally, Krutrim Pro, a more sophisticated iteration, is slated for launch later this year. Equipped with the capability to comprehend 20 Indian languages and trained on an extensive dataset of two trillion tokens, Krutrim signifies a significant advancement in AI technology within the Indian context.

Krutrim Si Designs, a venture founded by Bhavish Aggarwal, the mind behind Ola Cabs and Ola Electric, introduced its inaugural product, the Krutrim Assistant, in beta mode. This chatbot assistant, available at chat.olakrutrim.com, functions as a personalized generative AI assistant, proficient in understanding 20 Indian languages and generating text in 10 Indian languages. Despite minor hallucination issues inherent in AI models, particularly in Indian contexts, as highlighted by Aggarwal, Krutrim Assistant promises a lower frequency of such occurrences compared to global platforms.

The emergence of Indian companies focusing on large language models tailored for vernacular use is evident in recent developments. Sarvam AI debuted its Hindi language model, OpenHathi, in December, while conversational AI platform Corover AI introduced BharatGPT in January, integrating voice and text modalities in numerous Indian languages in collaboration with the National Hub of Language Technology.

Presently, Krutrim is exclusively accessible via its official website, with no official Android or iOS app available. Moreover, the service is currently free to use, with no subscription model in place. Initially limited to a select group of users, Krutrim is now in open beta, exclusively catering to Indian users, with no specifics regarding a stable or global release disclosed by the company.

With a workforce of 150 employees, predominantly comprising experienced hires with extensive experience in building scalable systems and foundational models, Krutrim Si Designs is poised for further advancements in the AI landscape, reaffirming India’s position as a hub for technological innovation.
