“Jio promises AI to everyone, everywhere”, Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani

Jio is set to bring its own AI model akin ChatGPT

During the 46th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) held recently, the Chairman of RIL, Mukesh Ambani, made an exciting announcement regarding India’s technological landscape. Ambani revealed that RIL’s subsidiary, Jio, is poised to introduce its very own AI model, a creation akin to ChatGPT developed by OpenAI. As the influence of AI continues to grow and permeate various facets of our daily routines, Jio’s decision to develop its AI model signals a benchmark not only for the company but also for India’s technological evolution.

Jio, which has consistently risen through the ranks to become a leading mobile operator in India, has expanded its influence and market presence over the years. In his speech, Mukesh Ambani emphasised this achievement of Jio in amassing a staggering subscriber base that now exceeds an impressive 450 million since its inception. With the integration of AI as one of its core features, Jio is set to achieve higher rankings. The incorporation of AI technology has the potential to amplify the quality and scope of services offered by Jio.

Flashback to June, an impactful statement resonated from Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, during his visit to India to grace an event. The conversation ignited when Rajan Anandan, the former head of Google India, directed a query towards Sam Altman regarding India’s efforts to build its own AI model, one like ChatGPT, to which Altman responded saying that it is “hopeless” and that India should not even attempt it.

This sparked a wave of debate, prompting many to question whether Mukesh Ambani’s strategic move was in response to comments made by Altman back in June. However, Mukesh Ambani has clearly stated that he aims to develop India’s AI landscape with Jio – delivering benefits to the Indian citizens, businesses, and government alike – report. He also later clarified in a social media post that his statements were misinterpreted and taken out of context, putting an end to the controversy.
