India champions global AI safety and accountability, calls to ensure citizen trust worldwide

India has emerged as a formidable advocate for responsible AI

India, as the chair of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) address at the “AI Safety Summit 2023” held at Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire, has taken a leadership stand on AI with Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and Electronics & IT, leading the way.

This speech addressed the need for AI principles rooted in safety, trust for users, and accountability for platforms.

In a landmark development, all participating nations on November 1, united to endorse “The Bletchley Declaration.” This document emphasizes the alignment of AI systems with human intentions and calls for further exploration of AI’s full potential.

According to PIB, “India, in its capacity as the chair of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), has taken a leadership stand on AI. We have maintained that AI should be guided by principles of safety & trust for users, and accountability for platforms” said Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and Electronics & IT, during day 2 of “AI Safety Summit 2023” held at Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire in the United Kingdom.

The minister engaged in bilateral meetings with counterparts from the UK, Australia, the Netherlands, and Ireland. In discussions with Viscount Camrose, the UK’s Minister of State for AI, and Intellectual Property, they pledged collaboration to mitigate user harm risks stemming from AI.

With Australia’s Minister for Industry and Science, Ed Husic MP, the focus was on enhancing ongoing collaborations in building talent pools and critical technologies, emphasizing India’s tech potential recognized post the G20 summit.

The meeting with Dutch counterpart Alexandra van Huffelen addressed the urgency of defining AI dos and don’ts among democratic nations to prevent falling behind in the rapidly innovating world.

During a previous meeting with Ireland’s Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital, and Company Regulation, Mr. Dara Calleary, both Ministers explored growing opportunities in the AI field.

Minister Chandrasekhar expressed confidence that like-minded nations will play a pivotal role in harnessing AI for global welfare, emphasizing the increasing real-world challenges posed by AI, such as deep fakes and disinformation, and the imperative need for global discussions to establish AI guardrails for the future.

India’s leadership in advocating for AI safety and accountability on the global stage continues to gain momentum, fostering cooperation among nations for a more responsible AI-driven world.
