HP and Google partner for affordable Chromebooks to boost digital education in India

This move aligns perfectly with the government's ‘Make in India’ initiative

The two giants, Google and HP, have joined hands to make affordable Chromebooks in India. HP, a renowned leader in the personal computer market, and Google, a tech behemoth, have embarked on a collaborative venture to bring about an affordable computing landscape in India. Both industry leaders, in their own right, have pooled their expertise to cater to the burgeoning demand for affordable personal computers in India.

One of the key highlights of this partnership is the decision to manufacture Chromebooks within India. This aligns perfectly with the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing and reducing reliance on imports. By producing Chromebooks locally, HP and Google are not only meeting the demand for affordable computing but also contributing significantly to India’s self-reliance in the technology sector.

The manufacturing of these HP Chromebooks is starting on 2nd October, 2023, focusing on being able to cater to the need for affordable computers in the educational sector. The devices will be manufactured at Flex Facility near Chennai – a location where HP has been producing laptops and desktops since August 2020.

With the proliferation of online education, remote work, and digital empowerment, there is an increasing need for budget-friendly devices that offer reliable performance. Chromebooks have emerged as a frontrunner in this regard, and the HP-Google partnership aims to address this demand effectively. A report indicates that the Chromebook devices are to be retailed at Rs. 20,000 and even lower in the case of bulk purchases.

These forthcoming devices will come equipped with ChromeOS, ensuring they encompass essential security features. ChromeOS, known for its robust security infrastructure, not only safeguards user data but also enhances the accessibility of these devices, as per a report highlighting the company’s statement. This means that they are well-suited for educational environments, fostering deeper connections in the classroom.
