Honeywell develops innovative lightweight sensor technology for the Lilium jet

Custom-engineered sensors will help Lilium’s electric vertical takeoff and landing jet fly, propelling the future of sustainable flight forward

Honeywell  has been chosen by Lilium , the pioneer of the first all-electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) jet, to provide propulsion unit position sensors for the Lilium Jet. These sensors, known as “resolvers,” have been meticulously designed by Honeywell to cater to the specific requirements of the Lilium Jet, ensuring precise sensing of the engine’s position crucial for safe takeoff.

This collaboration underscores Honeywell’s dedication to addressing three pivotal megatrends: automation, the future of aviation, and energy transition, as it ventures into sensing solutions for regional air mobility. Honeywell’s investment in Lilium, coupled with its provision of various key components for the Lilium Jet, including e-motors for engines, avionics, onboard thermal management systems, and the flight control computer, solidifies its commitment to advancing the aerospace industry.

Yves Yemsi, Chief Operating Officer at Lilium, commended Honeywell’s prowess in both the aerospace and sensing sectors, emphasizing their capability to comprehend the unique needs of the Lilium Jet and devise tailored solutions. By revolutionizing the traditional resolver, Honeywell is instrumental in transforming Lilium’s groundbreaking concept of a fully-electric, vertically launching and landing jet into a tangible reality.

Lilium Jet vision

Lilium’s ambitious vision aims to revolutionize regional transportation with the world’s first eVTOL jet, boasting zero operating emissions and offering accessible high-speed transportation. The Lilium Jet, powered by 30 electric ducted fan engines, necessitates precise movement from vertical to horizontal positions for takeoff and forward propulsion, a feat facilitated by Honeywell’s innovative resolver technology.

In collaboration with Lilium, Honeywell has developed a customized solid-state resolver employing patented spiral magnet technology and magneto-resistive sensors capable of accurately determining the position of magnetic objects. Notably, this resolver is lighter and more cost-effective than its conventional counterparts, showcasing Honeywell’s commitment to advancing electric aircraft technology.

Sarah Martin, President of Honeywell Sensing Solutions, highlighted the significance of this expanded partnership, emphasizing the shared goal of creating solutions for sustainable transportation. As the electrification of air transport continues to gain momentum, Honeywell’s sensors are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of advanced air mobility.
