Google introduces RT-2: The smartest robot known?

RT-2 can speak ‘robot’, says Google DeepMind

Humans have always been on the lookout for improvement and progress, which has been particularly evident in the paradigm of technology. Over the years, we have witnessed tremendous advancements that have revolutionised the way we live and interact with the world around us. One of the major innovations that has stirred the imaginings of engineers and science fiction writers alike is that of robots. The concept of robots assisting us in our daily tasks has been a captivating vision for decades now. The idea of having mechanical beings that could relieve us of our mundane chores, granting us time to focus on ‘better’ things, has been a collective notion by which robots are perceived.

From merely being a figment of our imagination, robots have now stepped into reality – thanks to Google. While it continues to dominate search engine technology by incorporating various artificial intelligence (AI) tools, Google has now launched its highly anticipated robot – Robotics Transformer (RT-2), which can already be seen to be pushing the boundaries of human-robot interaction.

The capabilities of this robot claim to extend far beyond the basics. It has reached a point where it aims to be ‘more than just a machine’. In a photo shared by Google DeepMind, RT-2 can be seen trying to curate tasks such as picking up things or being able to distinguish between objects. With its ability to replicate human activities like these, RT-2 aims to seamlessly blend into our lives, streamlining our lives beyond our imagination.

RT-2 has transcended expectations with the new approach of its vision-language-action (VLA) model which can directly perform tasks even with a small amount of data. Based on the Transformer model, which can basically understand the text and images from the web, RT-2 decodes this gained information and presents it in a way that can be easily interpreted by other robots in order to carry out their specific tasks in a practical manner.

By performing such complex tasks with ease, RT-2 is emerging as a strong model for us to rely on.
The age of robots serving humanity is about to become a tangible reality, with Google leading the charge. The introduction of this new technology into our lives is sure to mark a significant milestone in the human-robot relationship, unlocking a world full of incredible dynamics and possibilities.
