Elevating India’s oral care landscape is a must

By implementing advanced daily oral care practices like Water Flossing and adopting a proactive mindset towards dental health, individuals can elevate dental practices and habits

The prevalence of dental problems among the Indian population is a significant concern, with issues such as tooth decay, cavities, periodontal disease, and oral cancer affecting a large majority. Disturbing statistics from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reveal that 60-80% of children suffer from dental issues like misaligned jaws and gaps between teeth.

Shockingly, more than 50% of Indians seek treatment or advice from untrusted sources instead of consulting a qualified dentist. The impact of poor oral health is evident, as approximately 85-90% of adults face oral health problems, earning India the reputation of being the oral cancer capital of the world.

Our ability to eat, speak, smile, and convey emotions is directly influenced by our oral health. Oral health also plays a crucial role in an individual’s self-esteem, academic performance, and work or school attendance. Sadly, millions of people experience pain and functional limitations due to dental disorders, ranging from gum diseases and cavities to oral cancer.

Maintaining healthy teeth requires a lifelong commitment to proper care, regardless of whether one has been complimented on their dental aesthetics. This commitment involves using appropriate oral care products and adhering to a regular dental routine to prevent potential issues.

Sagar Awatade, Founder of ORACURA, revealed, “Due to a lack of awareness, dental hygiene often takes a backseat and is not given much importance until individuals experience severe dental issues that require complex treatments. However, many of these problems can be prevented by following a proper dental routine. While brushing is crucial for maintaining oral health, it alone is not sufficient. Traditional toothbrushes can only clean the visible surfaces of teeth, leaving the nooks and crannies untouched.

Using toothpicks or safety pins to remove food particles can actually cause more damage. Additionally, string flossing can be challenging for many people and can lead to bleeding and other issues. This is where water flossing becomes a convenient, effective, and reliable alternative. When used correctly, it not only reaches the spaces between teeth but also efficiently removes plaque and cleans gums, thus preventing various dental problems.”

The worsening of oral health and hygiene in India can be attributed to several primary reasons.

Lack of complete oral care awareness: There is a lack of awareness among Indians regarding oral care and hygiene. Many people are unaware of the severity of dental health issues and neglect them.

Irregular or no flossing: This is also a common practice, driven by the misconception that daily brushing is sufficient to prevent tooth decay, which is the primary cause.

Inaccurate information and myths: Myths such as sugar being the sole cause of cavities, contribute to the problem. Indians underestimate dental health and often visit the dentist only when complications are severe.

Excessive tobacco consumption: This is a major factor leading to toothaches, decay, and oral cancer.

Irregular dental consultations: Irregular dental consultations and neglecting recommended dental care routines, including flossing, exacerbate oral health issues.

Addressing the lack of awareness requires initiatives led by government and dental agencies with the support of renowned dentists to build credibility and encourage the inclusion of dental care routines in people’s schedules.

Here are some crucial factors to consider for better oral health:

Smart Brushing & Water Flossing: Incorporating the daily use of electric toothbrushes for efficient brushing and following it up with water flossing can significantly contribute to preventing dental issues like cavities and gum-related problems. It is highly recommended to include these practices in our daily routines. Dentists in India emphasize the importance of water flossing after each meal as it effectively removes food particles that might be stuck between teeth, thus preventing decay.

Regular Dental Consultation: In addition to preventive measures, regular visits to the dentist, at least twice a year, are essential. This aids in the early detection of any potential problems, thereby reducing the risk of severe complications in the future. Following the recommendations and suggestions should be a priority, with regular follow-up visits to ensure proactive actions towards maintaining dental care and hygiene.

By implementing advanced daily oral care practices like Water Flossing and adopting a proactive mindset towards dental health, individuals can elevate dental practices and habits, leading to improved overall oral health for the Indian population.
