WhatsApp introduces password-less passkey feature for android users

WhatsApp's Android support for passkeys is expected to be rolled out gradually over the coming weeks and months

WhatsApp, a subsidiary of Meta, has announced plans to roll out a password-less passkey feature for Android users. With this feature, WhatsApp aims to enhance security and user convenience. This move makes the two-factor SMS authentication redundant.

Based on the announcement on X, formerly Twitter, this feature for Android users will enable log-ins securely without relying on traditional passwords. Instead, the device’s built-in authentication methods, such as facial recognition, fingerprint scanning, or a PIN, can be used by individuals to unlock their WhatsApp accounts.

The passkey feature had previously undergone testing on WhatsApp’s beta channel and is now set for a wider release to regular users. There is no information available yet regarding when this feature will be extended to iPhone users.

WhatsApp’s Android support for passkeys is expected to be rolled out gradually over the coming weeks and months. Passkeys represent a modern approach to account security, as they replace conventional passwords with the two-factor authentication methods in the user’s device.

Apple and Google have earlier released the passkey feature in lieu of password authentication and advanced cryptography to enhance security. Google reports that passkeys can be unlocked using a fingerprint, facial scan, or PIN and are reported to be approximately 40% faster than traditional password entry.
