Automaker Ashok Leyland taps HPE to drive into the future

Ashok Leyland, the flagship company of the Hinduja group, is the second largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles in India, the 3rd largest manufacturer of buses in the world, and the 10th largest manufacturers of trucks. Headquartered in Chennai, it has a well-diversified portfolio across the automobile industry.

It has nine manufacturing plants, of which seven are located in India, a bus manufacturing facility in Ras Al Khaimah (UAE), one at Leeds in the United Kingdom and a joint venture with the Alteams Group for the manufacture of high-press die-casting extruded aluminum components for the automotive and telecommunications sectors.

Innovation hasn’t been new to Ashok Leyland. There have been several firsts to its credit, both in terms of new products and use of information technology. For enriched customer experience the IT team over the years has developed various applications using SMAC technologies. SAP and Microsoft Exchange are the key enterprise business applications.

“These two applications are the lifeline of the organization requiring 24X7 availability,” informs Venkatesh Natarajan, Senior Vice President and CDO, Ashok Leyland.

Most of these technologies are supported by HPE DAS, NAS and SAN storage systems like MSA1000, DAS2000, XP24000, EVA P6500 and others. When Ashok Leyland decided to embrace SAP HANA, they were faced with a couple of hurdles with one of their legacy storage system. The company had procured HPE Superdome Server when it decided to move out from legacy ERP to SAP. This storage system was nearing end of life and posed a challenge in the migration from Oracle database to SAP HANA. In addition, managing the storage system was getting complicated and required availability of expertise.
