Sri Lanka introduces visa-free entry for seven countries in a tourism revival effort

Tourists from India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand can now access Sri Lanka without visa fees. The policy will be in effect until March 31, 2024, as part of an initiative to bolster the island nation’s tourism industry.

Sri Lanka’s tourism sector has faced numerous challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, economic issues, and political crises. In response to these difficulties, the tourism industry is increasing its tourism target for 2023, hoping to attract 2 million visitors, up from the previous goal of 1.5 million.

Foreign Minister Sabry emphasised that this move is vital for the nation, which has faced economic and political turmoil, along with pandemic challenges. This progressive step follows the recent presentation of a Cabinet Paper by the Ministry of Tourism, proposing visa-free tourist entry for individuals from five countries.

This initiative is aimed to enhance Sri Lanka’s appeal as a travel destination and provide a much-needed boost to its economy. Visitors from the designated countries can now explore the nation’s rich culture and landscapes without the burden of visa fees.
