Three in four feature phone users express interest in switching to smartphones: Study

Limitations in feature phones are driving consumers to transition to smartphones, including 5G models.

The mobile phone market in India is experiencing a transformative shift, driven by changing consumer preferences and the rapid digital acceleration sweeping across the nation.  Feature phones have long been the cornerstone of communication for a significant portion of the Indian population. However, a recent report from CyberMedia Research (CMR) reveals a growing inclination towards affordable 4G smartphones and even 5G offerings within the sub-INR 10,000 segment.

According to the study, 78% of feature phone users prioritize longer battery life, 74% value ease of use, and 57% seek affordability along with digital capabilities. Despite these preferences for feature phones, an intriguing three out of four users are keen on transitioning to smartphones, particularly within the INR 6,000 to INR 8,000 price range.

Key Insights from the Study:

The study indicates a notable change in how feature phones are utilized. Indians spend an average of 3 hours daily on calls (87%), alarms (72%), and texting (62%). Moreover, one-third of users utilize apps such as weather (47%), news (34%), and social media (24%).

Despite the benefits of feature phones, users are increasingly frustrated with limitations such as poor camera quality (62%), lack of advanced apps (56%), and limited internet access (53%). These limitations are driving the transition to smartphones, including 5G models.

As the country undergoes digital transformation and the demand for affordable smartphones with advanced features rises, mobile phone manufacturers face the challenge and opportunity to innovate and cater to the diverse and evolving needs of Indian consumers.
