Reliance Jio's collaboration with SES positions India as a global leader in satellite-based broadband technology, showcasing the nation's capabilities in the space industry

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, has unveiled JioSpaceFiber, India’s first satellite-based giga fiber service. This technology promises to bring high-speed broadband services to previously underserved regions within the country.

The unveiling of JioSpaceFiber took place at the prestigious India Mobile Congress on 27 October 2023, marking a significant milestone in India’s telecommunications landscape.

Reliance Jio has partnered with SES, a leading satellite operator for the launch of JioSpacefiber. SES has opened the doors to cutting-edge medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite technology. This collaboration leverages SES’s O3b and the new O3bmPOWER satellites, making Reliance Jio the sole provider capable of delivering revolutionary Gigabit, fiber-like services from space.

The implications of this technology are immense, as it offers scalable and affordable broadband access throughout India with an unprecedented level of reliability and service flexibility.

In the media release by Reliance Jio Infocomm, Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, expressed his excitement about the project, “Jio has enabled millions of homes and businesses in India to experience broadband internet for the first time. With JioSpaceFiber, we expand our reach to cover the millions yet to be connected.” This initiative aligns seamlessly with the Government of India’s Digital India program, which aims to bridge the digital divide and provide access to the vast population.”

Reliance Jio’s collaboration with SES positions India as a global leader in satellite-based broadband technology, showcasing the nation’s capabilities in the space industry. JioSpaceFiber will play a pivotal role in the digital revolution for India in connecting the unconnected.

John-Paul Hemingway, Chief Strategy Officer at SES, echoed the sentiment, saying, “Together with Jio, we are honoured to support the Government of India’s Digital India initiative with a unique solution that aims at delivering multiple gigabits per second of throughput to any location in India. Our first fiber-like services from space are already deployed today in parts of India, and we cannot wait to see how this will lead to digital transformation even in the most rural parts of the country.”
