X unveils new audio and video call feature under Elon Musk’s stewardship

The platform's evolution continues as Musk aims to turn it into an 'everything app'

In a recent development under the leadership of CEO Elon Musk, X, the platform previously known as Twitter, has introduced a feature that allows users to initiate audio and video calls with one another.

This development represents yet another expansion of the app’s capabilities, marking the one-year anniversary of Musk’s takeover.

Under Musk’s ownership, X formerly Twitter, has undergone transformations, with the entrepreneur’s ambition to turn the platform into an all-encompassing app for its users.

Among the planned innovations are the ability for users to subscribe to their favourite creators, watch videos, express their thoughts in posts as long as 25,000 characters, facilitate fund transfers, make payments, and even the potential inclusion of high-yield savings accounts.

Earlier this year, Designer Andrea Conway of Twitter had offered glimpses of the new features, unveiling the user interface.

Linda Yaccarino, in her earlier remarks in August, hinted at the integration of video and audio calls into the platform’s broader transformation, emphasising the shift toward becoming an “everything app.”

Elon Musk personally took to the platform to provide insights into the forthcoming call feature. He revealed that the feature would be compatible with iOS, Android, Mac, and PC, eliminating the requirement for a phone number to utilise it. Musk characterised this innovation as a transformation of the platform into an “effective global address book.”

Ever since Musk’s took over the reins of X, the social media giant has witnessed several alterations to its features. During the summer, he announced the discontinuation of the ability for users to block accounts, signalling a shift in the platform’s moderation policies.

Additionally, Musk introduced the ‘Blue subscription model’, granting exclusive access to features previously known as ‘Tweetdeck’ to subscribers, as part of his comprehensive vision to redefine the platform.

With X’s ongoing evolution and Musk’s dynamic leadership, X is ready to reconfigure its digital landscape, expanding its offerings and capabilities to meet the diverse needs and preferences of its user base.
