ET-Insights: How do you see the impact of Covid-19 Pandemic on trade and logistics industry? 

Rizwan: It is still early days, as far as predicting the actual impact of Covid-19 goes. The situation is still evolving as the crisis continues to spread around the world. In my view, logistics industry will play a very crucial role in enabling the quick recovery of our economy once the crisis is over.

ET-Insights: What are the immediate risks do you see to the industry and how are you mitigating it?

Rizwan: The well-being of people employed in the industry, and business continuity despite all the disruptions are two big concerns of the industry.

At DP World, we have implemented a robust business continuity plan that is enabling us to serve customers with high service standards in these unprecedented times. All our operations are being carried out under strong safety protocols. Our business continuity and employee policies are aligned with directives from Central Government, State Government and other authorities.

ET-Insights: How prepared do you think the industry is to sail through this challenge?

Rizwan: The logistics industry has seen several disruptions in the past, brought about by economic recession or natural calamities. However, the industry has emerged stronger and more resilient every time. I believe the industry will sail through this challenge as well.

ET-Insights: How are the initiatives of DP World in technology, innovations and infrastructure assets, helping in addressing the current issues in the country?

Rizwan: At DP World, we have been working towards developing innovative solutions for our customers, so that they can have more efficient supply chains. We have a strong portfolio of logistics infrastructure and services in the country.

In the present scenario, all port terminals and inland freight terminals of DP World at Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai, Cochin, Ahmedabad, NCR and Hyderabad are operating 24×7. These are supported by our rail operations, CFSs, warehouses, 3PL and Cold Chain businesses. We are leveraging technology well to keep our operations running efficiently at all our facilities despite several constraints.

Through our uninterrupted operations, we are ensuring the continuous flow of essential goods across the country. It is a matter of immense pride for us to be able to support our customers and our country in this hour of crisis.

ET-Insights: What is your take on the government’s response so far? 

Rizwan: The government has taken timely decisions to enable the flow of essential goods during the nationwide lockdown. They have formed task forces which are continuously engaging with stakeholders and industry players to remove operational bottlenecks.
