Google integrates generative AI in Google Docs and Gmail

Google reportedly announced on Tuesday that select developers can now enter its large language models (LLMs) from an application programming interface (API) and select users can avail the upgraded versions of Gmail and Google Docs integrated with generative artificial intelligence (AI). The new features are part of Google’s experiments to enhance its tools, which, as per Thomas Kurian, Chief Executive of Google Cloud, will be continued throughout the year.

“Developers and businesses can now try new APIs and products that make it easy, safe, and scalable to start building with Google’s best AI Models through Google Cloud and a new prototyping environment called MakerSuite. And in Google Workspace, we’re introducing new features that help people harness the power of generative AI to create, connect, and collaborate,” said Kurian in a blog that detailed the new improvements.

A couple of developer-focused features – PaLM API and MakerSuite – will enable Google’s language models to build and test products and prototypes. Developers can currently access the PaLM API in a simplified, “efficient” form. In the future, the language model’s complexity will be expanded. Those creating generative AI-based apps will be able to test prompt engineering and the results of their generative AI experiments utilising the development environment MakerSuite.

Workspace applications such as Google Docs and Gmail are getting generative AI abilities. A text generation tool, like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, will soon be available to some customers and businesses within the mail or the Docs apps. Users can simply ask Google to write a certain paragraph, and Google will do so.
