Engineering effectiveness: Unlocking the power of high-performing teams!

Industry leaders share their thoughts in a live webinar titled, "Engineering Effectiveness for Competitive Value," hosted by ET Edge Insights.

New economic and geopolitical headwinds are pressuring businesses to rethink many things, including their tech strategies.

With rising costs and unpredictable market conditions, businesses are also feeling the pressure to leverage engineering talent in a more effective, sustainable, and visible way.

Global technology consultancy company Thoughtworks, along with ET Edge Insights, hosted a live webinar on “Engineering Effectiveness for Competitive Value,” last week.

The discussion focused on how businesses can optimize their engineering processes, systems, and teams so that they can roll out and deliver high-quality products and services quickly. The speakers spoke on how engineering teams can streamline workflows, eliminate bottlenecks, deliver more with less, reduce software development waste/friction, and enhance productivity.

The webinar witnessed participation from around 225 plus IT leaders and managers across sectors.

Ariel Schabas, CTO, Ecommerce & Marketplace / CIO of Latin American retail conglomerate Falabella shared his views on why Engineering Effectiveness is important to organizations and the need to focus on it.

The speakers believed that a high-performing team has twice the likelihood of achieving business objectives compared to an average team. By investing in the development of high-performing teams, organizations not only enhance team culture and morale but also directly impact their financial success.

Speaker Key Quotes:

“It is hard to measure productivity in an engineering organization. But what we can do is find the waste in the development process. Where are teams wasting time and doing non-value-added repetitive activities? If we can eliminate this waste, then we can get direct savings or enhance employee efficiency. The Engineering Effectiveness framework concept or framework is designed to say how do we measure what’s important and not necessarily what’s easy.” Ryan Murray, Executive Technical Director, Client Solutions, ThoughtWorks

“Costs of talent and engineering are skyrocketing because of a competitive landscape. Today, cost of infrastructure and Cloud are also becoming a big part of our P&L. In such a scenario, it is super important for us to be effective in terms of the number of resources that we deploy and maximize their impact to generate tangible business value. By doing this we can ensure that we reach the time to value or time to market quickly. Consequently, by prioritizing resource effectiveness, we not only enhance productivity but also accelerate our ability to seize market opportunities and drive sustainable growth.” Ariel Schabas – CTO, Ecommerce & Marketplace / CIO, Falabella

Consequently, by prioritizing resource effectiveness, we not only enhance productivity but also accelerate our ability to seize market opportunities and drive sustainable growth.

“Measuring at the team level and then looking at the outcome is key for measuring Engineering Effectiveness. Also, one would need leading indicators (predictive metrics), which reflect the inputs, activities, and outputs of systems engineering processes.” Sunit Parekh, Service Lead, Enterprise Modernization Platforms and Cloud Service Line, ThoughtWorks India

“Software development is a value stream activity. Waiting time is one of the ‘big wastes’ here. Often, we see that very little time is spent on adding value and a lot of time is spent on waiting. Inability to find information, leading to waste of time, is another source of waste.” Akshay Dhavle, Lead – Digital Talent Strategy, ThoughtWorks India.
