Amul MD RS Sodhi resigns; company poised for major changes

The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Federation Ltd (GCMMF), also popularly known as Amul, announced that its longest-serving director, RS Sodhi, has stepped down from his role, in a sudden development. The reasons for the same haven’t been disclosed. RS Sodhi served as the Managing Director at Amul for 12 years, having been appointed to the role in June 2010. Chief Operating Officer (COO), Jayen Mehta, has been appointed as the interim Managing Director.

In a meeting held on Monday at AmulFed, the board reportedly urged Sodhi to resign. Subsequently, Amul’s chairman Shamal Patel and vice-chairman Valamji Humbal signed a letter to the now-former MD, informing him that, per resolution 2 of the board, he must step down and transfer over authority to COO Jayen Mehta.. Since both Patel and Humbal were unavailable to comment on the recent developments, numerous speculations have emerged since the company’s announcement. Sodhi worked for Amul for forty years in all, first as a manager and finally as the company’s managing director.

Sodhi, on the other hand, said that he had planned to leave the dairy association about two or three years ago and had asked the board to relieve him of his duties as Managing Director because he was on an extension. Sodhi also said that he was “very happy” with the board’s decision, and he denied rumours that he had been “fired.”

The newly appointed MD, Jayen Mehta, has been with Amul for the last 32 years.
